Spotting Fake Sneaker Damages: A Reseller's Guide

Streetwear verification is getting harder. Scammers are using AI to generate scuffs, tears, and 'fake' receipts for StockX and GOAT returns.

Spotting Fake Sneaker Damages: A Reseller's Guide

The Attack

Scammers use generative in-painting (Adobe Firefly, Midjourney) to add fake damage to photos of pristine sneakers for fraudulent returns on $500+ items.

The Process

  1. Purchase expensive sneakers
  2. Photograph pristine product
  3. AI in-paint damage (tears, stains) onto image
  4. Submit to return portal as "Arrived Damaged"
  5. Keep product, receive refund

AI Damage Detection Markers

  1. Texture inconsistency: Smooth blur patches on high-resolution leather grain
  2. Shadow physics violations: Damage shadows don't match light source direction
  3. Geometric failures: Laces merge into shoes or disappear at damage points

Veto's Solution

Training data: 50,000 sneaker pairs. Distinguishes real scuffs from diffusion-generated damage through physics-based analysis.

Stop $500+ losses per fraudulent claim.
